Sorting pictures gives students a stronger oral language base than looking at the sounds in isolation on a worksheet. They deal with words at a visual level, so they can analyze the speech sounds that go with the pictures. They have a phonological understanding they don't get when just looking at written words and letter combinations.
These kids have sorted through many cards to come up with ways to sort the words. I have to admit, I was a little nervous giving them this many cards to go through, but they seemed to really enjoy the activity and then were able to read the lists of words/pictures.
Here they are in action...I love the hand up... because it's his turn! LOL
