All Work and No Play?

Howdy y'all! I have a little goodie for my kindergarten and first grade friends. It's a writing journal! Check {it} out!

I have a question for you. Do you make all sorts of plans for everything you're going to do over the summer, and then never get them done? That's me.

Last Tuesday I had a quick visit with my sister from Idaho. She was staying with my mom in Michigan, and drove down to visit the rest of the family. Well, on Thursday, as I was sitting at McDonald's with my 3/4 unsweetened/1/4 sweetened tea, I thought, I want to see more of Sabrina! You may even know her! If not, go take a spin on her blog {A Space to Create}. She is an awesome art teacher and even creates activities for our young'uns that support the Common Core.

So, I called my sister who lives just south of me to see if She and Tina would drive to Michigan with me. I couldn't believe it! They said yes and started pulling it all together. Stephany's awesome and she loves to drive . . . me? . . . not so much!

I kept thinking I should be working right now. I know, I'll just work on the computer during the 6 hour drive! So we took off, listening to some awesome 70s jams as we drove. We stopped at a McDonald's for a potty break, and found out we just missed a terrible hail storm. This is what we saw  . . . and apparently the storm ended 20 minutes before we got there! So, we kept on driving . . . the computer still didn't come out. We finally arrived in Ludington, Michigan at about 12:30 a.m.

The next morning, we headed out to find my mom, Sabrina, and Virgil. We didn't really know how we were going to find them because they were already out and about for the day. We decided to look for the green Honda van and about 2 minutes later, we spotted it on the side of the road with Virgil inside. We scoped out the situation and spotted mom and Sabrina. We snuck into the store where they were and asked if we could help them. You should have seen the looks on their faces when they saw us! I only wish we would've had Tina video tape the encounter! It was so funny . . . and Sabrina hit me 5 times! We had a great day and ended it around the fire pit and told lots of childhood secrets and laughed like crazy!

Still haven't gotten the computer out . . . Who cares, right?! We were in gorgeous Michigan with family and friends! Check out some of this gorgeousness!

It is so easy to get sucked into this world of creating teaching resources, and forgetting that summer is supposed to be FUN and RELAXING!  I'm back home now, and I'm ready to get back to work. Oh, and if you wondered, I NEVER did get that computer out.

So turn off the computer and go have some fun! It will help you clear your mind and get more done in the end!

  2. Hi Hilary:
I have to learn to stop feeling guilty about "time wasted." If I don't relax a little during the few weeks away from school, I will have no energy when the kids return in the fall.
    It's all about balance.
And time with family is precious...

  3. Oh my! I LOVE surprises....especially when I'm on the "surprising" end, not as much on the "surprised" end. My Dad had open heart surgery in March, so I flew in for Mother's Day weekend and surprised them both....YAY! I'm the same when it comes to driving...I think I've REALLY contributed if I drive for an hour on a road trip. Thanks for the MY FIRST JOURNAL post. Love it! :-)

  4. Hilary,
I really enjoyed your post! It's true about being a teacher...one's work (or thinking) is never finished, even during a vacation. Plus, you're so creative and productive. I can imagine how difficult it is to just stop and rest. Thank you for finding the time to share.

  5. Could not agree more... the list never ends! And if you're not a teacher you can't understand how it works that way - but trust us, it just does. I am now your newest follower :) come stop by if you get a chance!
