Word Sorting-Fun and Good for You!

Word sorts are highly effective in teaching literacy to young students by helping them grasp the meanings and relationships of words. Students use cards with printed words on them and sort them into groups.
Sorting pictures gives students a stronger oral language base than looking at the sounds in isolation on a worksheet. They deal with words at a visual level, so they can analyze the speech sounds that go with the pictures. They have a phonological understanding they don't get when just looking at written words and letter combinations.
These kids have sorted through many cards to come up with ways to sort the words. I have to admit, I was a little nervous giving them this many cards to go through, but they seemed to really enjoy the activity and then were able to read the lists of words/pictures.

Here they are in action...I love the hand up...                                                                                because it's his turn! LOL
