Fantastic First Day of Book Clubs

This week I have been giving my kids benchmark tests to determine their reading level. After figuring out their levels, I decided to have one of my groups start another book club. We reviewed our group rules and I reminded them that I was not a part of the book club and that they are expected to run the group and treat each other with respect. We also discussed how to listen while another person is talking and how to build on their comments.

I made a short video (3 min.) from their first meeting. The kids have taken a 'picture walk' through the book and are now predicting what they think the book will be about. (I know that is a preposition at the end of a sentence, but I just can't make myself talk good! LOL)

Isn't it neat how they disagree and are still being cordial! I'm one proud mama!

If you would like a copy of my Book Clubs . . . Easy as 1, 2, 3, just click the pic! (Or the words. . .)

This book club packet really does work well and helps the kids work independently. . . even when their teacher is sitting on the floor with a phone in their face! I think they were really into their discussion . . . they didn't pay any attention to me!

  1. WOW, Hilary!
    That was impressive.
I may show this to my sixth graders to prove that it CAN be done! If little friends can do it, big kids should have no trouble...
    Thanks for posting this!

  3. Wow!! I'm impressed! Your packet looks great! I haven't done a lot with book clubs....what I've done has been facilitated mostly by me. It would be great to let the students run the show!

  5. Do you do this in addition to guided reading? Or is this instead of guided reading?

  6. I do guided reading with my whole class, but if they're doing a book club, that's their reading group for the week.

    Hope that helps!
