3 F's . . . or are There More Than 3?

Happy Thanksgiving everyone! I hope you had a glorious day. We did. I saw a guy on TV who said that Thanksgiving is about the 3 F's . . . Family, Food, and Football. Well, I think he forgot a couple of the F's! What about Friends?! What about Followers who are Friends?! That's what you are to me. I may not know you personally, but you are most definitely Fabulous Friends! Okay, enough Foolishness. (hehehehe)

I want to share a couple of the inference pages that I got from my kids last week. I just can't believe how well they are doing with this difficult skill. The kids are even filling sticky note after sticky note with inferences from books they are reading at Read to Self, Read to Someone, and the Listening Station.
I  LOVE  IT!

Click one of these excellent examples if you would like to see what
your kids can infer!
Are you going out shopping on Black Friday? Not me . . . Well, I do have to pick up one little item for tomorrow. My brother is home for Thanksgiving, so we are celebrating Christmas with a white elephant exchange tomorrow. I really don't want to go to the store tomorrow, but I've been slackin'. I guess it's the turkey!

Wait a minute. There was a reason why I asked if you were going shopping! I wanted to ask if you knew about the big sales that will be going on this weekend!! If you are like me and love to find deals and really don't want to go out and hunt for them, these sales are for you! I will have all of my resources on sale, and TN and TpT are taking off an extra 10%! What?!

Get'em While They're Hot!

Hi guys!
I couldn't get full-blown math mysteries done, so I decided I would make some mini-mysteries! Instead of having 10 problems to solve, I made these with 5 problems. I kinda like the idea of some shorter versions. It seems like my kids never have time to finish one during math stations.

Just like all of my Math Mysteries, I based the problems on the Common Core State Standards! I made the {2nd}, {3rd}, and {4th} grade versions.

Hope you have had a super Saturday!

Inference Skills Made Easy and Fun!

These little lovelies are showing one of the posters with
some of the inferences they made.
I want to show you something that I made to help my kids with making inferences. However, I feel so guilty . . . I don't want you to think that I'm just trying to sell you something. I hope you know that I don't just make stuff to sell. I sell stuff that I make to use in my own room.

Anyway, I'm really excited about this . . . Oh, and let's not forget to mention that inferring is a Common Core Standard. Yep, that's right and it is a standard that continues all through elementary school.
K-5.RL.7

And to think, I used to have so much trouble teaching this skill to my kids. Now, they are inferring like pros!

Here's how I introduced my first lesson.

I shared this poster and read the story to the kids.
I then share some basic inferences with them. I say "I can infer that the knight will help the princess get an apple out of the tree."
Then, I tell the kids to turn and talk to their partners and see if they can come up with some inferences from the picture/story.
The kids share some of their ideas and I tweak them to make sure that they are making inferences, and not just looking at details in the picture. For example: A child might say "There is a red flag on the castle." Then I might add, "Yes, there is a red flag and it looks like it is moving. If the flag is moving, then the wind is probably blowing."

The next day, I break the kids up into groups of 2 or 3 and give them a picture and story to use to infer together. I gave them a worksheet that asks questions to help get the kids started on making their inferences.

Discussing the pictures and stories using our
newly acquired inference skills.

Check out these rockin' kids inferring. The clips are only 10-15 seconds each. So check them out! You will be impressed. I am!

After we practiced inferring, I hung up a poster with blank lines so that the kids could write inferences if they thought of one.

Next week, I am going to put out these inference cards for the kids to use at stations. They have to match the pictures with the clue cards. I guess they could play a memory game too.

Have a thundering Thursday! If you would like to get your kids inferring like crazy, just click {here} or click the pics.

Get Fluency Flowing in a Flash!

I needed a way to help parents understand the importance of reading fluency.

I know it is difficult to sit through . . .um I mean listen to a child read aloud to you, especially when you are trying to get kids to events, cook dinner, help with homework, and the list goes on and on. However, it is super important!

I thought it might be nice if parents had a little background knowledge to help them, help their child. Why not tell them what fluency is or how it sounds? Why not give them directions on how to help with those things? Well here's a {pack} that can help with all that!

I do depend on great resources like {Lakeshore Learning} for my reading passages for the kids to practice at home. I sure don't want to type all of those reading passages up on my own! There are also some awesome resources that you can find online, and they are FREE!

If you care ~

The Common Core State Standard - Reading: Foundational Skills for Fluency {Grades 1-5 RFS.4} states:

Read with sufficient accuracy and fluency to support comprehension.

  • a. Read grade-level text with purpose and understanding.
  • b. Read grade-level text orally with accuracy, appropriate rate, and expression.
  • c. Use context to confirm or self-correct word recognition and understanding, rereading as necessary.

Hope you went out to VOTE today! Rock on USA!
