We Chose Scholastic News!
Do you use Scholastic News in your classroom? Well, we have been using TFK for the past 10 years . . . The secretary at our school had just asked our team if we would want to switch from TFK to Scholastic News, when I was contacted by Laine Falk from Scholastic! She asked if I would like to try SN out to see if it would be something I would use in my classroom, and if it would be something I would recommend to my readers . . . that's YOU!
Well, I have to say, I LOVE IT!
I was worried about it being too long for my second graders . . . but . . . NOPE! It was just right . . . 2 pages, front and back.
I was also worried about it skipping all around and being hard to understand . . . but. . . NOPE! The issues followed a theme and taught the children different aspects of the topic. My favorite issues were the ones about the wind and Dr. Seuss. There is even an anticipatory short video to introduce the topic of the week. You can check this one about Dr. Seuss, right now! As the students read the issue, there are questions at the end of each page. They ask questions about what the kids have been reading to check for understanding. After finishing the issue, there is a game that the kids can play individually or on teams, to check for understanding or work on some other skill that was addressed in the issue. If I was rating the Scholastic News on a scale from 1 - 10, I'd say it was a 9.5 . . . Why only 9.5 you say?
Can someone explain to me why newspapers like this can't package the issues in 'like' stacks???? It drives me NUTS to have to sit and sort the issues into 4 piles!!!
